تشهد الإنترنت في العالم العربي نموا غير مسبوق من حيث عدد مستخدمي الإنترنت، حيث تجاوز هذا العدد أربعين مليون مستخدما بالمنطقة. وتجاوزت نسبة النمو ما يزيد على ١٤ ضعفا خلال السنوات السبع الماضية بمعدل مائتين بالمائة سنويا. ولكن هذا النمو لم يصاحبه نموا مطردا في المحتوى العربي على الإنترنت حيث أن المحتوى المنشور باللغة العربية لا يتجاوز واحد بالمائة من إجمالي المحتوى على الإنترنت على الرغم من أن اللغة العربية هي خامس أكثر لغة يتحدثها البشر حول العالم.
وتحرص شركة Google من خلال العديد من المبادرات على إثراء المحتوى العربي وذلك ليستطيع المستخدم العربي من الاستفادة من الإنترنت والوصول السريع للمعلومة التي يبحث عنها، وكانت من أهم المبادرات التي قمنا بإطلاقها هي مشروع Knol وهي أداة نشر سهلة تمكن المستخدم العربي من مشاركة الآخرين ما لديه من علم ومعرفة. وقد شارك في وضع أساس هذا المشروع مهندسون عرب كان همهم الأكبر هو إثراء المحتوى العربي على شبكة الإنترنت.
وتتميز أداة Knol في كونها تساعد الكاتب في: تنسيق ما لديه من معلومات ووضعها في إطار عرض جميل ومناسب، واستخدام المواد المتوفرة على الإنترنت من مرئيات وصوتيات وغيرها، بالإضافة إلى تمكين الكاتب من متابعة قراء الصفحة ومعرفة عددهم والرد على تساؤلاتهم في جو من الحوار الممتع والمفيد. كما أن نظام Knol يسهل الوصول للمعلومة من خلال جعلها متاحة من خلال مختلف محركات البحث ومنها Google.
وقد شهدت الشهور القليلة الماضية الكثير من الظواهر الإيجابية ومنها كتابة العديد من المتخصصين لمقالات في مجالات علومهم، والاقبال الكبير على العديد من المقالات والتي يقدر عدد قراءها بالآلاف، وحدوث نوع من التواصل بين الكتاب والقراء مما أسهم في إثراء المحتوى. ومن المقالات المتميزة: الحصان العربي ومواصفاته،

The internet in the Arabic world is witnessing an unprecedented increase in the number of Internet users; there are over 40 million Arabic users online today. The growth has been sustained, with a 200% increase every year for the past 7 years. However, this growth happened without a commensurate increase in the Arabic content on the web. Arabic content on the web actually accounts for roughly 1% of the overall web content. This is despite the fact that the Arabic language is the fifth most spoken language around the world.
Google is committed to enriching Arabic content in on the web through multiple initiatives, so that the Arabic user can benefit from the Internet and a rapid access to the information he/she seeks. An important element of this effort is the launch of Knol in Arabic. Knol is an easy publishing tool that enables an Arabic speaker to share his/her knowledge with others. The Arabic engineers who worked on this project had increasing Arabic online content as primary goal.
Knol allows writers to edit their information and put it into a concise and convenient form, accessible to Arabic searchers worldwide. Writers can easily include rich media such as audio, video and others. In addition, Knol enables the writer to track the number of viewers and readers and answer their questions, helping create an informative and engaging environment for discussion. Knol makes information easier to access by making it available through different web search engines, including Google.
During the past few months, Knol witnessed strong adoption. Experts from various fields wrote articles in their areas of expertise.
