قامت Google بتنظيم يوما خاصا G-Gaza بمدينة غزة يوم الخميس الموافق 24 يونيو 2010 وكان الحدث عبارة عن جلسة ممتدة على مدى اليوم بأكمله ومخصصة لأحدث الابتكارات في مجال الانترنت بمشاركة 125 من الطلبة ورواد الأعمال في مدينة غزة بالأراضي الفلسطينية. وقد تضمن الحدث يوما كاملا من التدريب والتعريف بأحدث الابتكارات بما في ذلك HTML5، تطبيقات Chrome، تطبيقات Google، محرك التطبيقات App Engine، خاصية التعريب Google Ta3reeb، مجموعة أدوات الترجمة، الانترنت عبر الجوال mobile web، الخرائط على واجهات برمجة التطبيقات API والكثير غيرها. ومثل الكثير من المناسبات التي يتم تنظيمها في جميع أنحاء العالم، وآخرها في أفريقيا وإسرائيل، فقد شرف هذا الحدث بحضور الكثير من عشاق منتجات Google من الشباب.
ولا يسعنا هنا إلا تقديم خالص الشكر لـ MercyCorps التي قامت برعاية هذه الرحلة وهذا الحدث الشيق بالاشتراك مع مجتمع تكنولوجيا المعلومات ضمن جهودها الخاصة في تنمية اقتصاد التكنولوجيا في الأراضي الفلسطينية و الشرق الأوسط. وقد تم تنظيم حفل موظفي شركة Google بغزة في ختام الزيارة التي استمرت 3 أيام والتي تقابل من خلالها أعضاء من موظفي شركة Google بالولايات المتحدة والمملكة المتحدة مع رواد الأعمال والطلاب والأساتذة ومحتضني المشاريع وجمعيات الإنترنت والجامعات والمنظمات الغير حكومية بهدف التوصل إلى فهم أعمق للاقتصاد والتعليم وصناعة تكنولوجيا المعلومات في غزة. وكان هدفنا هو التفاعل مع المجتمع المحلي للتكنولوجيا حتى نتعرف على كيفية تقديم دعم أفضل لرواد الأعمال والشركات في المنطقة، وقد أردنا من خلال هذا الحدث أن نكتسب فهم أعمق لكيفية وصول الناس إلى المعلومات ومن ثم التوصل إلى كل مجال مازال في حاجة لتطوير.
وكان مردود الزيارة في غزة مردودا إيجابيا للغاية، فقد انتشرت التكنولوجيا وتنمية شبكة الإنترنت في الضفة الغربية وقطاع غزة وأصبح الناس يدركون الإمكانات الغير محدودة للانترنت والحوسبة السحابية، وبالرغم من أن المعدات المستخدمة مثل أجهزة الـADSL وشبكات الـWimax والنقاط اللاسلكية مازالت محدودة التواجد في قطاع غزة إلا أن شبكة الإنترنت والانترنت عبر الجوال والابتكارات المحلية تعد في ازدهار حقيقي، وكما هو الحال في باقي دول الشرق الأوسط فإن Google تساهم في نمو بيئة الانترنت من خلال تسهيل الوصول إلى المعلومات وزيادة المحتوى العربي بالإضافة إلى توفير الأدوات اللازمة لتطوير شبكة الإنترنت والجوال.
وفي نفس الأسبوع، تحديدا يوم الاثنين الموافق 21 يونيو، تواجد موظفي شركة Google في رام الله بالضفة الغربية لحضور افتتاح مجموعات مستخدمي تكنولوجيا Google لمسابقة الـCode Jam الخاصة بفلسطين وتم عرض أحد التطويرات المفتوحة المصدر لتطبيقات الأندرويد لأكثر من 100 مطور من الشباب الذين ظلوا يعملون في بيئة محاكاة حيث لم يرى أحدهم في أي وقت مضى هاتف الأندرويد أو حتى قام بحمله. وقد قوبل الحدث بشكل جيد واستمر حتى المساء بالرغم من مباريات كأس العالم التي ظلت تذاع على شاشات التلفزيون في المقاهي المحلية. مبروك لكل الفائزين في مسابقة الـcode jam.
الفرص المتاحة كثيرة جدا في الأراضي الفلسطينية حيث أن انتشار الإنترنت في تزايد سريع (فقد وصلت نسبة الاختراق في الضفة الغربية إلى 40% بينما وصلت – غير رسميا – إلى 60% في غزة) مما أظهر الحاجة إلى نمو متوازي في النظام المعرفي الاقتصادي . وما يتم تنظيمه الآن من استضافة المطورين ورواد الأعمال وعقد مسابقات الـcode jam لا يمثل سوى خطوة واحدة في مواصلة مشاركتنا مع مجتمع التكنولوجيا في الأراضي الفلسطينية تحديدا ومنطقة الشرق الاوسط عموما.
وتقوم Google بدعم 18 مليون من مطوري البرمجيات في جميع أنحاء العالم من خلال الانترنت عن طريق code.google.com ومن خلال أدوات ومنتديات ودورات تدريبية ومجموعات مستخدمي تكنولوجيا Google أو الـGTUGs ومهرجانات المطورين والأيام المخصصة للمطورين ومعسكرات الـBarCamps واللقاءات المختلفة والكثير غيرها. وقد ارتكزت جهود التوعية على مهندسي البرمجيات في جميع أنحاء العالم وفي الآونة الأخيرة تم وضع اهتمام متزايد على الأسواق الناشئة في (أفريقيا جنوب الصحراء وجنوب شرق آسيا والشرق الأوسط). أما في الأراضي الفلسطينية فقد بدأ التواصل منذ عامين ووصل الآن إلى الترحيب بالتكنولوجيين من غزة في مجتمع المطورين. فمع حرية الوصول إلى المعلومات وأدوات الحوسبة السحابية (cloud computing) يمكن للفلسطينيين أن يسعوا جاهدين من أجل تواصل أكثر في المستقبل.

Googlers in Gaza
On Thursday June 24, 2010, Google hosted G-Gaza—a day long Internet innovation session with 125 students and entrepreneurs in Gaza City in the Palestinian Territories. The event included a full day of training and introductions to latest innovations including HTML5, Chrome Apps, Google Apps, App Engine, Google Ta3reeb and the translation suite, mobile web, map APIs and more. Much like the developer events we’ve held around the world, and most recently in Africa and Israel, the event was attend by young enthusiasts of Google products.
With special thanks to MercyCorps who, as part of their efforts to support expansion of the technology economy in the Palestinian Territories and the Middle East region through partnering with the IT Community, sponsored the trip and event. G-Gaza was held at the end of a 3 day visit where Googlers from the U.S. and U.K. met with entrepreneurs, students and professors, incubators, Internet associations, universities and NGOs to gather a deeper understanding of the economy, education and IT industry in Gaza. Our objective was to interact with the local tech community to see how we can better support entrepreneurs and businesses in the region. Through the event we wanted to gain a deeper understanding of how people are accessing information, by what means and what development is still needed.
The Gazan response to the visit was overwhelmingly positive. The West Bank and Gaza have embraced technology and web development and people recognize the limitless potential of the Internet and cloud computing. Although equipment such as ADSL routers, Wimax infrastructure, and wireless access points are limited in Gaza, the Internet and mobile web development and local innovation is flourishing. As in the rest of the Middle East, Google is enabling the growth of the ecosystem through easier access to information, the growth of Arabic content, as well as, providing tools for web and mobile development.
In the same week, on Monday June 21st, Googlers were in Ramallah, West Bank, for the inaugural GTUGs Palestine code jam which featured open source Android development on App Engine for 100+ young developers building in an emulation environment where none of them have ever seen or held an Android phone. The event was so well received that it continued even as the World Cup evening games appeared on the TV screens at local cafes. Congratulations to the winners of the code jam.
There is a lot of opportunity in the Palestinian Territories as Internet penetration is increasing rapidly (40% penetration in the West Bank and an unofficial 60% in Gaza) showcasing a need for the growth of the Internet ecosystem. Hosting developer and entrepreneurs days and code jams is only one step in continuing our engagement with the tech community in the Palestinian Territories and the wider MENA region.
Google supports the 18 million software developers around the world online through code.google.com and with tools, forums, training events, GTUGs groups, Developer Festivals, Google Developer Days, BarCamps, Meetups, and much more. Our developer outreach has focused on software engineers around the world and recently increasing efforts have been placed in emerging markets (Sub-Saharan Africa, South East Asia, and the Middle East). Outreach in the Palestinian Territories started 2 years ago and now technologists in Gaza have been personally welcomed into our developer community. With free access to information and cloud computing tools, Palestinians can strive for a more connected future.
