مرحبًا بكم في مدونة Google العربية في الشرق الأوسط وشمال أفريقيا التي نتشرف بإطلاقها آملين أن نقدم لكم من خلالها آخر ما تنجزه Google من أنشطة وفعاليات في المنطقة.
لقد أصبح "التغيير" "الثابتة" الوحيدة في عالمنا الحديث، فلا يكاد يمرّ يوم علينا من دون أن يطرأ جديد ليغير من طريقة تفكيرنا أو تنفيذنا أعمالنا. فظهور الإنترنت، وما تبعه من طريقة إنشاء المعلومات واستخدامها، أحدث علامة فارقة ميّزت جيلنا الحديث؛ فقد كان للإنترنت دور فاعل في إلغاء فجوة الوصول إلى المعلومات بين مختلف الشعوب، أو ما يعرف بديموقراطية الوصول إلى المعرفة الإنسانية.
وعلى الرغم من التأثير الإيجابي للإنترنت في حياة الفرد، فإننا نواجه تحديًا حقيقيا في عالمنا العربي، وهو أنّ المحتوى العربي على شبكة الإنترنت يشكل أقل من واحد في المئة من إجمالي المحتوى، مع العلم بأن اللغة العربية تحل في المرتبة الخامسة بين اللغات الأكثر استخدامًا في العالم . ولعل تيسير الوصول إلى أدوات النشر عبر الإنترنت لكتابة مدونة عبر Blogger، أو مقالة في Google Knol، أو رسالة عبرGoogle Groups، أو تفاصيل مكان عبر Google Earth، سيمكّن المستخدم العربي من التواصل ليس مع عائلته وأصدقائه فحسب، بل مع مستخدمي الإنترنت حول العالم.
إننا نشهد تغيرًا في أنماط حياتنا العلمية والعملية والاجتماعية بسبب الإنترنت، فهناك المستخدم في المغرب الذي يحضّر بحثًا أكاديميًا باستخدام محرك بحث، أو رجل الأعمال الإماراتي الذي يتحدث مع آخر سعودي عبر أحد برامج التخاطب المباشرة، أو المرأة المصرية التي تنشر مقالات وصورًا في مدونة عائلتها للتواصل مع أقربائها داخل مصر وخارجها. وبفضل وسائل الترجمة الآلية أصبح مستخدم الإنترنت العربي قادرا على قراءة محتوى الشبكة المتوفر باللغات الأخرى، بل وأصبح متحدثو اللغات الأجنبية قادرين على قراءة المحتوى العربي على الشبكة.
وتواجه Google وغيرها من الشركات العديد من التحديات في المنطقة، لعل أهمها هو كيفية توفير الإنترنت لأكبر قدر من المستخدمين في المنطقة، وكيف نوفر لهؤلاء المستخدمين ما يريدونه من معلومات باللغة العربية، على الرغم من اختلاف هذه اللغة جذريا عن أغلب اللغات الأخرى، وكيف نعمل مع جماهير المستخدمين في العالم العربي لدعم إثراء المحتوى العربي على الإنترنت.
إن حماسنا كبير تجاه ما يمكن أن نقدمه لمستخدمي المنطقة، بخاصة في ظل ما نراه من تطور ونمو، ولهذا فقد بذلنا ما في وسعنا خلال العامين الماضيين من أجل تحقيق هذه الغاية. واليوم بات لـ Google مكاتب في دبي والقاهرة، تشهد نموًا سريعًا في عدد موظفيها ومشاريعها. كما تم تكوين فريق من المهندسين العرب متخصصين في تطوير المنتجات التي تناسب المستخدم العربي؛ ونأمل أن يستمر نمو هذا الفريق خلال الفترة المقبلة، راجين أن يؤثر هذا الفريق إيجابًا في حياة عشرات الملايين من المستخدمين العرب حول العالم.

Welcome to the official Google Arabia Blog for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). We are very excited about this launch and look forward to providing you with ongoing updates on Google's activities in the region.
Every so often something comes along that radically alters the way we think and act. The invention of the Internet and the way it has changed how we create, move and consume information will be looked back on as one of the seminal moments of our generation. The Internet has broken down the barriers that exist between people and information: effectively democratizing access to human knowledge.
Regardless of background, education, social status, gender, age or economic situation, online access to information enables people to create opportunities for themselves.
While it's clear the Internet has made us more powerful as individuals, we face a real challenge in the Arabic-speaking world in that today, less than one per cent of content available on the web is in Arabic. But with easy access to communication tools like blogs, knols, groups on Google Groups, and layers on Google Earth, Arabic users can not only connect with friends and family, but with a global audience.
Seeing a student in a cybercafe in Morocco doing his research using a search engine, or a businessman in Dubai chatting with a colleague in Saudi or elsewhere with instant messaging, or a young woman in Cairo posting articles and photos to a family blog to keep in touch with relatives at home and abroad - makes the extent to which academic, business and social life is fundamentally changing all over MENA very clear. Thanks to modern translation tools those in the Arab world can access information that is available on the English web---and foreign-language speakers can discover Arabic content translated into their language.
But clearly Google and other companies face significant challenges in MENA in making the Internet available to as many people as possible. How do we make the world's information available in Arabic - a language that is very different structurally from most other languages? How do we work with communities to improve and increase the lack of Arabic content available on the internet? How do we support online access to users in communities without infrastructure to support it? These are only some of the questions we are asking ourselves and continue to work very hard on.
We are tremendously excited about the opportunities in MENA and that's why over the last two years we've been ramping our efforts here. We now have growing offices in Dubai and Cairo and a dedicated engineering team focused on the Arabic speaking market -- an we hope to keep growing with a team that will positively affect the lives of millions of Arabic users around the world.
